After 25 years of seeking to emulate the Western masters, I was deeply dissatisfied with a future that seemed to hold only the prospect of greater technical skill, and making art that did not feel as though it came “from me”. I therefore completed the Diploma in Art and Creativity of The Learning Connexion, Wellington (2.5 years) had a year travelling around galleries in the USA, Spain, Ireland, Italy and Malta, all the while painting with borrowed materials on the spot, and completed the Honours Diploma in Art and Creativity in 2110.
For the Honours year I was devoted to exploring mateials, processes and materiality, and feel I now make art that is authentically grounded in my own experience and satisfies the questions of earlier years. I am now entirely involved with materials and processes, and non-representational means of connecting with the viewer through their own interpretation of what they see, allowing the materials to speak for themselves through their responses to processes such as repetition, heating cooling, and pressure.
This trip has drawn a number of responses from me, and confirmed the direction of my work. Surprisingly, it has brought me back to quasi realism painting in relation to the wreck of the SS Waitangi at Mana Bay - for which find more information at my website http://miriamruberl.weebly.com, and a profound commitment to my belief that all materials and processes are viable, one does NOT have to commit to one foresaking all others, and am finding myself working in a number of materials and processes as I explore my many experiences on this trip.
